Ditch the usual pirates or princesses theme and opt for something a bit more unusual for your kids party – here’s our top 10 list to choose from

Lego

Boys and girls all love Lego and it can make a novel theme for a party. You can download or create your own Lego invite, commission a giant yellow Lego head cake or simply decorate your own cake with edible Lego bricks. For the goodie bag you can splash out and include a mini Lego set for each child or mix and match by buying Lego merchandise including character crayons, mini figures, stationary and stickers – the list is endless.

Peppa Pig

Babies and toddlers love Peppa Pig and you can buy plenty of merchandise to make it a fun theme for a party. From plates and drinking cups to cakes and balloons, you can even hire a Peppa Pig to turn up at your party to really give it an added extra.

Circus

Bright, colourful and fun a Circus theme party could work for all ages and genders. Send out tickets as invites, hire a clown or magician as an entertainer, dress the room like a Big Top, get a bubble machine and you’re away. You can easily pick up circus themed party bits from plates to centrepieces.

Beach Party

Giant beachballs, a sand pit complete with bucket and spade, ‘cocktails’ and hot dogs – a beach party can be a fantastic theme that children of any age can enjoy. Add a Hawaiian twist and you can include grass skirts for the girls and flowery shirts for the boys plus games like limbo and a coconut shy.

Rock Star Party

Get kids to embrace their inner rock star with a musical themed party where they can dance, sing and generally make a lot of noise. Make sure your venue can handle the din, hire a karaoke machine and some inflatable guitars for the entertainment or get a full-on disco going with glitter ball lighting and rock tunes on the decks.

Science Party

Older children will love a science party where they can carry out experiments, blow things up, watch things explode and generally create a lot of mess. There are a number of excellent franchises that can organise these parties with an expert leading the fun so you don’t have to put on the white coat.

Art Party

Again, this can be adapted for most ages with little ones joining in some messy art activities like hand and foot painting to older ones creating mini masterpieces or decorating t-shirts. The theme is easy to carry through into cakes and goodies bags – just remember you might need to do quite a bit of clearing up afterwards.

Willy Wonka

Fans of Roal Dahl’s infamous book will relish a chance to create their own chocolate factory for the day. Golden ticket invitations are a must to set the scene and then at the party you’ll need a chocolate fountain, plenty of sweets and a few wonka themed games like a golden ticket treasure hunt and a golden egg race. Kids can even make their own wonka bars to take home. Great fun.

Space Party

From rockets and space ships to aliens and planets, a space party theme can be magical and easy to create. A solar system cake, pin the antennae on the alien game, flying saucer pizza (individual mini pizza’s) and space gloop for pudding (green jelly) are just a few ways you can make the theme come alive while goodie bags can contain glow in the dark stars, alien key rings, space stickers and some sweet treats like milky way bars, cookies cut into the shape of stars or the moon or flying saucer sherbet sweets.

Mad Hatters Tea Party

Fans of Alice in Wonderland will revel in their very own Mad Hatters Tea Party. From giant top hats and pocket watches to pin the smile on the Chesire Cat this quirky theme can be great fun. Instead of goodie bags, give each child a sweet cone with an ‘Eat Me’ label and organise a traditional cream tea for the food with sandwiches, scones and cakes.
